...I posted a photo of my daughter's first day of kindergarten on my Facebook page.
I let her choose her own outfit. That would be tie-dye leggings, a plaid wool skirt and a beadazzled peace sign shirt. |
Egad. Is this true? I mean, I may have noted before that my Type-A, uber-achieving, model student sister had a Jonathan Livingston Seagull lunch box (nerdo.) And I hate to think that my own Waltons lunch box set the tone for my school career (>sigh<...it totally did.)
So now I'm worried. What does the Hello Kitty lunch box say about my kid? And what lunch box did you have as a kid?
Goodnight, John Boy,
Brutalism
(Note: Read this week's Oakton Patch column about my half marathon experience. Then mock me.)

I wore a matching yellow terry cloth tank top and short (with white piping!)...and matching sweatband with stuffed satin wings. I believe my lunch box was Dukes of Hazzard.
That was Tuesday. I don't remember what I wore my first day of kindergarten.
Tante - I just spat a cracker. Well played.
I didn't have a lunch box for the first couple years of school - strictly brown-bag. The first lunch box I remember having was a pink plastic barbie lunch box (those ones with the clips and the thermos that fit inside). I remember this one because by fifth grade I was mocked mercilessly for STILL carrying it around. After that I went back to brown bags.
I missed an excellent opportunity for laughs by not sending either of my kids to kindergarten carrying my tin CLERKS the cartoon lunch box with Jay and Silent Bob.
I was a brown bagger.
Probably explains why I grew up to be a wino.
Seriously, I had lunch boxes, but don't remember them. Might even have been Hello Kitty for all I know.
"a beadazzled peace sign shirt"? Really? We aging hippies just snorted, and not in a good way.
My lunch box was a Samsonite.
I was pretty fat.
Yandie - I believe you are the first Goddess to have commented on this blog. Certainly you are the only Goddess of Pickles. That makes me very happy for some reason.
I think your kids' teachers would have definitely appreciated the Clerks lunchbox. Awesome.
Ed - Sure, you have to battle alcoholism now, but think how happy your teacher must have been when you passed out every afternoon after your MD 20/20 "lunch"
Gilahi - You probably feel the same way I do when I hear Ramones songs shilling cars in commercials. It's really not right, is it?
Moooooog - Now you're phat -- so no permanent damage, right?
I don't remember what my lunch box was but if it set the tone for my first year of school then I'm sure it was of Burt Reynolds hanging out with the ladies, if you know what I mean. ;) ;)
Oh wait, I remember now. It was a Gilligan lunch box. Yeah that seems more accurate.
I got stuck on the word "bedazzled." I once had this neighbor who was obsessed with gem-i-fying anything that could take the glue. When she did rings around the headlights of her car, I moved.
Oh, and I had tupperware--damn orange box with "snapping handles." I now put ALL leftovers up only in ziploc bags & leftover chinese containers. Totally Ware Phobic.
A lunch box says NOTHING. I had a red/black plaid box (TWSS) that was really dorky, but look at how cool I turned out to be.
I am more worried about that well behind your daughter. Wasn't there some story about a kid falling down a well? It could happen.
The first day of kindergarten I wore a one-piece bell-bottom pantsuit. I think that year my lunchbox was either Starsky and Hutch or Barbie. I was all over the map.
Christian - I hope your mom went with the theme and packed you Skippy and Ginger ale. (Wow. That was a total stretch. I'm embarrassed for myself.)
Chantel - See? This is where homeowners associations are falling down on the job. Who the hell cares what color your front door is painted? No one, and I mean NO ONE should have to live next door to a headlight bedazzler.
SUAR - A red and black plaid box? I guess that means you're Scottish?
Sarah - Ha ha ha ha a one-piece bellbottom pansuit. (Suddenly remembers her plaid corduroys and poncho with matching plaid trim first day of school outfit...) I'm sure it was in style at the time...
I'd carry that Hello Kitty lunchbox. It's awesome. Hello Kitty is pretty popular - I don't know many girls who don't like her. I have Hello Kitty band aids in y medicine cabinet and they are not for my children (boys)- they are for me and those with boo-boos whom I choose to bestow the gift of cuteness.
Two thumbs up for that lunch box.
WOAH, that was so subversive and offbeat that I need a day to recover before I read any more of your blog.
Nico - Her other lunch box features DOTS candy. I'm not sure that or Hello Kitty really makes a statement about her or her school career.
Rai - I warned you.
The Ramones shilling cars. Jethro Tull shilling cars. John Lennon shilling cars. And not just any cars. It's Lincolns and Cadillacs. It's sad when one reaches they age that they become the target demographic for luxury automobiles.
TWO lunchboxes?! Are you millionaires?
Gilahi - >weep< no kidding.
Nico - Yes. Yes we are. Look how thoughtlessly I just threw the whole "two lunchboxes" thing in everyone's face as though everyone could afford two lunch boxes...
I wonder what the poor people are doing today?
We're trying to decide between porridge or porridge for supper.
Mine was Transformers. I like to think that my school career would be characterized as 'more than meets the eye,' but it seems unlikely.
My daughter just started Kindergarten with that same Hello Kitty lunchbox. Weird. I had My Little Pony. I wish I had gone to school in Pony Land.
